Defending truth at Davos

4 phenomenal women spoke about defending truth at Davos following the number one risk of desinformacion. For any board, it is critical to base decisions on thorough information internally and for environment we operate.

As discussion moderator Mark Leonard pointed out in the Global Risks Report for the year 2024, disinformation will be the most significant risk in the coming years, driven in part by unresolved information wars.

Emma Tucker, Editor-in-Chief of The Wall Street Journal, noted the specific challenge of preserving trust in an era of diverse sources of information and disinformation, as well as how to make truth profitable.

Speakers agreed that disinformation is lucrative, as the characteristics of falsehood are cheap and quick, while the characteristics of truth are expensive and slow.

Vera Jourová, Vice-President for Values and Transparency at the European Commission, emphasized that one of the EC's key tasks is to reduce people's susceptibility to believing in falsehoods, arming them with facts.

Key points from the discussion included: Trust is the most valuable asset in any field. Honesty should take precedence, especially honest admissions of mistakes. Truth should be based on facts and confirmed by reality. The current era could become an era of artificial truth, while the threat to AI lies in the lack of freedom of speech.

Finally, Jeanne Bourgault, President and Chief Executive Officer of Internews, added an important point that could be the subject of a separate discussion: gendered misinformation and disinformation are particularly undermining when it comes to expertise. There is a particular danger that news organizations worldwide need to consider, as any public-facing women are particularly vulnerable.
